The 8(a) Business Development Program: Leveling the Playing Field

Section 8(a) of the Small Business Act establishes a Business Development Program that helps level the playing field for small businesses that are owned by socially and economically disadvantaged people or entities. This program limits competition for certain government contracts to program participants and establishes mechanisms so qualified 8(a) businesses can learn from an experienced government contractor through the 8(a) Mentor-Protégé program. This class will give an overview of the 8(a) program and its benefits. It will also discuss how contractors can get certified to participate in the 8(a) program. Finally, this class will cover the 8(a) Mentor-Protégé program, the Management and Technical Assistance program, and how 8(a) participants can win sole source awards.
