How T-Mobile is Innovating for its Customers in Greater Washington, D.C.

Interview with George J. Fischer, SVP of Sales, T-Mobile Business Group

Telecommunications company T-Mobile expanded its presence in Fairfax County in September of 2023, with the opening of a new office in Herndon. Comprising six floors and 220,750 square feet, the innovative space has a striking interior design, with ultra-contemporary furnishings utilizing eco-friendly practices. Operations at this building are focused on sales, technical and legal, in addition to a Special Federal Operations organization that does specialized work with the U.S. government.

George J. Fischer, Senior Vice President of Sales, T-Mobile Business Group sat down with the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority to chat about the new Herndon office and why Fairfax County is a great place for it to be located. He also discussed the company’s innovative technologies (hint: 5G!); and current career opportunities, including for veterans.

Speaking about the new Herndon office, Fischer remarked: “This facility has turned out to be fantastic for our employees. It’s much more modern after our renovation. It’s centrally located, and it has all the conveniences for working in a modern environment. And, also, it’s very attractive to our customers.”

At T-Mobile, “We deliver digital solutions through America’s largest and fastest 5G network. Surrounding the connected worker is really our main focus,” Fischer said. “The idea that hybrid work has really evolved to mean mobile work. There’s a lot of features built into the network to enhance security and of course, high speed.”

And choosing to expand T-Mobile’s presence in Fairfax County was really an “easy decision,” Fischer noted. “This is an incredible concentration of cloud service providers, software innovators, systems integrators, and scores of headquarters for global and U.S.-based companies. In addition, with the government presence here, the opportunity to work with these customers and organizations is better here than almost anywhere.”

Geographically, Fairfax County is very conveniently located, he emphasized. “It’s an amazing place to have what we informally call our Eastern Hub.” While there are other hubs across the nation, the Herndon location is ideal for conducting business in Mid-Atlantic region.

“It’s very central. Not only do we draw from many organizations in Washington, D.C., but of course this technology corridor is filled with customers,” Fischer explained. “In addition, being so close to Washington Dulles International Airport it’s easy for people to come in and out of here, either from New York or other parts of the country. So, it’s great geographically.”

Access to talent was also a key determinant, according to Fischer.

“The employee base here, the available skill sets here, are super highly skilled across the board and diverse,” Fischer said. “Not only is it a great place to work and live, it’s also a great place to build an organization because of the skill base.”

Ease of working with Fairfax County and the state

Another key factor is the ease of working with Fairfax County, according to Fischer.

“Working with Fairfax County is incredibly easy,” Fischer said. “They understand and are very business friendly, but also have the same values that we have in terms of giving back to the community and accessing local workforce. And building out and discussing ways to draw in new customers and new members of the community.”

In addition to in Fairfax County, T-Mobile is investing throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia with the statewide expansion of its 5G network.

“All the great things about Fairfax County are also true in many ways across the Commonwealth of Virginia,” Fischer explained. “The population is highly skilled. There’s a lot of business and government activity. So, it makes perfect sense for us to continue, as we have over the last two years, to vastly improve and expand our network here.”

“We are very proud of our relationship with Fairfax County, and certainly our investments and commitment to the Commonwealth of Virginia. We look very much forward to expanding our business here and creating opportunity. We’re growing our business, and we look forward to working with the residents of Fairfax County and all the businesses and the Commonwealth of Virginia,” Fischer added.

Providing 5G innovation for government and commercial customers

T-Mobile is innovating for customers here in Greater Washington, D.C. in a variety of ways, both in the government and commercial sectors.  “Most of it surrounds harnessing the 5G network that we’ve built in the last two years,” Fischer said.

5G stands for “fifth generation” of wireless network technology. It works at higher frequencies than its predecessors, resulting in greater bandwidth and faster data transfer. This creates opportunity for quicker downloads, smoother streaming, and more responsive and reliable online experiences, even in spots with high network traffic.

“We’ve spent tens of billions in building the nation’s largest 5G network,” he explained. “There’s a lot of features built into the network to enhance security. And, of course, high speed and reliable access. So, what that means is that we can provide connectivity for the mobile worker and for the office worker.”

“In addition to our people, we have made substantial investments in our network nationwide,” Fischer said. “Right here in Virginia, we’ve built out, across all the markets, including small and rural communities that may have had disadvantages to connectivity previously. So today we have connectivity that’s fantastic across the state. We want everyone to have a fabulous experience with 5G.”

“Our 5G network that’s second to none,” Fischer added. “It is a fabulous network that gives us a platform to build solutions for government and business. We have an unprecedented opportunity to deliver digital services that allow economic growth.”

For example, Fischer noted that T-Mobile focuses on providing accessibility services that enable people who are hearing or sight impaired to access its 5G technology. In addition, T-Mobile works with first responders and public safety personnel to give them the advantage of utilizing reliable 5G connected telecommunications services, potentially saving lives.

T-Mobile has a long-standing commitment to our active military, veterans and their families to say thank you for their service.”

“Veterans are highly skilled, extremely motivated, and have high integrity. Plus, we know that the skills that people learn in the military are transferrable to corporate roles.
