Fairfax Companies Help Virginia Earn Golden Shovel Award; 17 Employers Honored for Commuter Excellence

Area Development Recognizes Two Fairfax NOVA Companies for Gold Shovel Award

From life sciences to national security, Virginia’s diverse economy is cultivating a winning formula for economic growth and earning national recognition. The Commonwealth has been named a 2026 Gold Shovel Award recipient by Area Development, recognizing the nation’s top-performing states for attracting transformative investment, creating high-quality jobs, and building long-term economic competitiveness. Virginia stood out for its ability to secure major wins across a wide range of industries, including semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, energy, defense, and technology.

Fairfax County helped power that success through two of the state’s standout projects. On the tech and software front, Systems Planning & Analysis (SPA) is adding 1,200 jobs through its expansion in Alexandria and Chantilly, while 22nd Century Technologies is creating 880 new jobs in McLean, reinforcing Northern Virginia’s position as the nation’s premier hub for technology and national security.

The region’s momentum extends beyond investment announcements; this year, SPA President Terry Benedict was named DOD Executive of the Year by WashingtonExec, and SAIC General Counsel Hilary Hageman received General Counsel and Compliance Executive of the Year honors. Together, these milestones reflect the strength of Fairfax NOVA’s innovation ecosystem and its continued role in driving Virginia’s economic success.

Virginia’s ability to compete across a wide range of sectors simultaneously, while providing robust career opportunities for top-tier talent, is what earns it the Gold Shovel Award. Read more from Area Development here.
