Aerospace Ascends to New Heights in Fairfax

A satellite floats in space above earth

While some communities are making their first reaches toward aerospace investment, Fairfax NOVA is already soaring among the stars. It’s not hyperbole to say Northern Virginia is the home base for America’s aerospace industry. No other locality in the United States receives more federal procurement dollars and high-profile projects than Fairfax County.

Today, more than 125 aerospace & defense companies operate in Northern Virginia, capitalizing on unparalleled access to the U.S. government, robust innovation networks and an abundant sector workforce. That includes names like Airbus, Northrop Grumman, Boeing, Peraton, Leidos, Booz Allen Hamilton, BAE Systems and General Dynamics.

Industry titans, tech-driven trailblazers and government partners join forces here with a shared mission: to turn next-generation ideas into powerful realities with an interstellar impact. If you want to know what’s next in aerospace & defense, set your sights on Fairfax NOVA.

Fairfax Continues to Advance the Future of Aerospace

Talent. Universities. Partnerships. Multiple factors converge to make Fairfax County the ideal launchpad for aerospace companies to pioneer advancements across diverse fields. As a result, many of the industry’s most exciting emerging technologies find fertile ground in the region.

From unmanned aircraft and satellite technology, to artificial intelligence and digitization in space, to 3D printing, predictive maintenance and automation in aerospace manufacturing, Fairfax is on the leading edge of global aerospace industry trends. The region’s integrated ecosystem and supply chain play a major role in making this possible. Businesses are welcome to test their innovations, tapping into a community of partners, research institutions, government agencies, incubators and venture capital firms.

Bringing next-generation space technologies to life also requires talent. A constellation of 45 regional colleges and universities is concentrated around Fairfax NOVA, awarding over 15,000 tech-related degrees annually. In turn, these institutions fuel an aerospace and defense sector workforce of more than 184,000.

George Mason University is a prime example. The Fairfax-based university hosts one of the nation’s largest colleges of engineering, which propels new technology and aerospace research while equipping future workers with skills in AI, quantum computing, cybersecurity and more.

The region’s talent pipeline is further bolstered by the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, a coalition of five Virginia colleges and universities, NASA and other institutions. One of the coalition members, the University of Virginia, is leading research on sustainable aviation fuel to reduce carbon emissions in air travel.

Landing New Investments

As the aerospace industry ascends to higher frontiers, Fairfax NOVA continues to land major investments. Of the county’s 125-plus aerospace companies, 70 have relocated or expanded in Fairfax in the last three years. Zooming out, the Commonwealth of Virginia has attracted nearly 70 aerospace and unmanned system projects within the past decade, totaling more than $865 million in investment.

The region’s tech talent and proximity to federal clients have supercharged the growth of the Dulles Technology Corridor, hailed as “the Silicon Valley of the East.” In 2024, the Aerospace Corporation relocated its headquarters to Chantilly, Virginia. The move brings the research company closer to key customers and stakeholders amid rising U.S. defense spending. Looking to anticipate emerging needs, Aerospace chose Fairfax as a base to work closely with the Department of Defense, the intelligence community, NASA and defense industry partners.

Northern Virginia’s position as an international air travel hub generates investment in other ways. Commercial aviation giant United Airlines announced it will open a new terminal at Dulles International Airport in 2026, paired with a state-of-the-art flight training center near the airport. This new wing will have space to accommodate United’s fresh fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft.

Commercializing the Final Frontier

For decades, space exploration was out of reach for private actors. That’s no longer the case today, with places like Fairfax leading the charge to commercialize the “final frontier.” As technology becomes more cost-effective and investment more abundant, companies big and small flock to Northern Virginia to pioneer everything from satellites and reusable rockets to asteroid mining.

Startups Take Off in Fairfax

There’s a reason why Fairfax is a breeding ground for startups at the forefront of disruptions and innovations in the aerospace industry. Funding, mentorship and access to talent are all available to help fledgling startups achieve liftoff. Fairfax NOVA’s connectivity and networks also prove vital, empowering smaller and specialized firms to engage with industry giants nearby.

This creates the perfect environment for MAG Aerospace, born in Fairfax, to deliver its technology integration services to the U.S. Army in partnership with defense sector leader L3Harris Technologies. A similar story goes for space electronics provider Trident Systems, whose work as a subcontractor for Northrop Grumman has fueled its expansion in Northern Virginia.

Collaborative opportunities also take on an international dimension in Fairfax NOVA. In 2024, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) selected the Dulles Technology Corridor for its first U.S. innovation center. With its five-month accelerator initiative, IAI aims to foster cooperation among local aerospace startups and develop new technologies in AI, quantum science, sustainability, energy and space.

Industry Giants Call Fairfax Home Too

It’s not just smaller firms leveraging Fairfax as their home base. Top players like Booz Allen Hamilton, Northrop Grumman and Peraton all set up their headquarters here. In fact, 38 of the top 100 global defense companies operate in Fairfax County – including five Fortune 500 companies.

And that list is only growing larger. In 2022, Blue Origin landed in the city of Reston, establishing a center of excellence to advance its mission of commercial space exploration. The company taps into the region’s talent pool to pursue a wide range of operations, from space infrastructure product development to devising new launch and propulsion systems.

For America’s leading aerospace and defense companies, investing in a location near the nation’s capital has a tangible payoff. Fairfax County gives companies a direct line of access to key decision-making players in space and defense missions. It also brings critical space assets within close reach, especially NASA’s facilities in Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Maryland.
