Access to talent: A key benefit of CGI’s Fairfax headquarters

Interview with Tim Hurlebaus, COO and President at CGI

Fairfax County’s exceptional talent pool significantly benefits CGI, according to Tim Hurlebaus, President and Chief Operating Officer. In a recent interview, Hurlebaus highlighted the advantages of the company’s U.S. headquarters location.

“Fairfax County has been a great location for us because we’re able to find and attract talent to deliver the services we need to serve our clients,” Hurlebaus stated. He emphasized the area’s appeal to families, noting, “I have lived here for three decades and raised a family here. My kids graduated from Fairfax County Public Schools, which is a big draw for attracting employees with families.”

Hurlebaus has served at CGI for 36 years. Before his current position, he led both of CGI’s strategic business units in the U.S., most recently as President of CGI’s U.S. commercial and state government operations. He has also led CGI Federal, a wholly owned U.S. operating subsidiary of CGI, which serves CGI’s clients across civilian, defense and intelligence sectors of the U.S. federal government.

CGI: A global IT powerhouse

CGI, one of the largest IT and business consulting services firms globally, was founded in Quebec, Canada, in 1976 by Serge Godin, who is still active in the company as co-chair of the Board of Directors. CGI employs over 91,000 people globally, more than 16,000 in the U.S., and over 3,000 based in Fairfax.

Hurlebaus explained, “We call our employees ‘CGI Partners’ because 87 percent own shares of CGI stock. And therefore, we are all partners in the success of our business.”

CGI provides services to the private sector, the commercial sector, and state, local and federal governments—including financial services, manufacturing, utilities and energy, communications, retail, and health and life sciences companies.

The Fairfax location offers CGI advantages, including proximity to strategic alliance partners like AWS, Google and Amazon, federal, state, and local government, commercial clients, and nonprofit organizations.

Fairfax County: ideal location for CGI

CGI benefits from the region’s strong educational institutions. Hurlebaus noted, “Much of our talent comes from the top-notch universities in Virginia. We’ve got George Mason University right here in Fairfax County.” He also mentioned partnerships with other Virginia universities, including University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, James Madison, and William and Mary.

Hurlebaus explained that these partnerships extend beyond recruitment, “We work with local universities, influencing their curriculum in areas like cyber and cloud technology.”

CGI actively participates in the Northern Virginia community through various initiatives, including hosting STEM camps for local students, collaborating with organizations like the Red Cross on fundraising initiatives and participating in local 5k run/walk events and other community events. CGI Partners also enjoy bringing their children to the office for Bring Your Kids to Work Day.

Hurlebaus said, “Involvement in this community is important to who we are and something we enjoy doing alongside our clients. It helps us build stronger relationships and increases the impact we make together.”

The company recently redesigned its Fairfax office to create a modern, light-filled workspace that enhances employees’ work environments.
