An extensive network of highways, railroads and airports links residents and businesses from Fairfax to D.C. – and the world. The area is also linked with a comprehensive regional transit system that connects our business centers to the entire Washington, D.C., region. This system means our businesses can draw from a pool of millions of workers. 

And while the physical infrastructure is driving connections with the D.C. area, our digital connections are unparalleled. Northern Virginia has four times more data center capacity than Silicon Valley. In fact, in his book, “Tubes: A Journey to the Center of the Internet,” author Andrew Blum calls this area “the bulls-eye of America’s internet.” 

Roads

A Tremendous Highway Network

Fairfax County has a tremendous highway network to move people and goods to their destinations using the best route with the shortest driving distance. And, thanks to public-private partnerships there are carpool and toll options on the Capital Beltway (Interstate 495), Interstate 95 and Interstate 66, and soon on Interstate 395, as well. 

Regional Transit

A Comprehensive System

Fairfax County also is linked with a comprehensive regional transit system that connects our business centers to the entire Washington, D.C. region. This system means our county’s businesses can draw from a pool of millions of workers. 

  • Metro: The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority operates the interconnected rail and bus service. Fairfax County is served by 14 Metrorail stations on four lines, including the Silver line to Washington Dulles International Airport and Loudoun County. 
  • The Orange Line conveniently connects Arlington, VA, to the District of Columbia and to Prince George’s County, Maryland. It runs all the way from Vienna, VA, to New Carrollton in Maryland. 
  • Metrobus options have substantially helped travel time during rush hour. From Falls Church to Alexandria, you can find an option to assist your daily travel. 
  • Fairfax Connector: The Fairfax Connector is the largest local bus system in Northern Virginia, linking our neighborhoods with important business and government centers throughout the region. 
  • Virginia Railway Express: The VRE operates commuter rail lines from Manassas and Fredericksburg, to Union Station in Washington, D.C. Five stations are located in Fairfax County: Lorton and Franconia/Springfield on the Fredericksburg line, and Backlick Road, Rolling Road and Burke Centre on the Manassas line. All Fairfax County VRE stations have park-and-ride lots.

Close Proximity to Major International Airports

  • Washington Dulles International Airport is a convenient gateway to the world for Fairfax County and the national capital region. Dulles serves more than 20 million passengers a year, including millions of international passengers, to and from destinations around the globe. Dozens of worldwide carriers operate at Dulles, and it is a hub for United Airlines.
  • Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is located minutes from Fairfax County and Washington, D.C. Reagan serves more than 20 million passengers a year with service to most American markets as well as Canada and the Caribbean.
  • Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) is located 38 miles (51.5 km) from Tysons, with service to dozens of domestic and international markets.
