Long & Foster is a family of companies that comprises Long & Foster Real Estate, Prosperity Home Mortgage, LLC, Long & Foster Insurance and Long & Foster Settlement Services, as well as Long & Foster Corporate Real Estate Services and Long & Foster Property Management. Long & Foster Real Estate is the No. 1 privately owned residential real estate company in the United States and has more than 220 offices, stretching from Leland, North Carolina, to Colts Neck, New Jersey, and from Charles Town, West Virginia, to the Atlantic Ocean. It represents more than 11,000 agents in seven Mid-Atlantic and Northeast states, plus the District of Columbia. In 2015, Long & Foster agents sold over $31.4 billion of real estate and helped people buy and sell homes nearly 90,000 times.

When was your company established?
Long & Foster was founded on May 22, 1968, in Fairfax, Virginia.

What is the origin of your company name?
The company is named after our founders, P. Wesley “Wes” Foster, Jr., and Henry Long. The pair flipped a coin to decide whose name would be first for the business. Though Foster purchased Long’s share of the business in 1979, the name remained the same.

Who owns your company?
Long & Foster Companies is owned by P. Wesley “Wes” Foster Jr. and the Foster family.

What is the main business focus of your Fairfax County office?
We have more than a dozen offices throughout Fairfax County, where hundreds of our agents and our employees work. At our Chantilly, Virginia, headquarters of The Long & Foster Companies, we have over 300 employees, who help support our 220-plus real estate and ancillary service offices throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast with business services such as training, marketing, accounting, information services and licensing, among other critical operations. Our headquarters team works to ensure that each of our offices, and in turn each of our agents, provides clients with the best real estate services possible. We also have over a dozen real estate offices in Fairfax County. The teams at these locations are focused on providing best-in-class customer service to clients throughout the region, whether they’re looking to buy or sell a home in Fairfax County, or are in need of one of our many other services, such as property management, relocation or insurance. Additionally, Long & Foster Insurance, Long & Foster Property Management, Prosperity Home Mortgage, LLC, and the title companies within Long & Foster Settlement Services, such as RGS Title, operate out of our real estate offices throughout Fairfax County or have their own locations in the county.

Who are your primary customers?
Our customers include anyone who would like to buy or sell a home, maintain or manage a property, obtain a mortgage or refinance their home, protect their investments with insurance, settle on a home, rent a vacation property or complete one of many other real estate related transactions that our team effectively handles. For many years, it has been Long & Foster’s goal to advise and empower real estate clients with the help of knowledgeable, trustworthy professionals. We work and live for the love of home, and we’re diligently working for our clients.

Has that customer base changed, or do you anticipate a change?
We are a much more global business today than we were when our company was founded in 1968. We’ve grown from a single office in Fairfax, Va., to more than 220 offices from North Carolina to New Jersey. We’ve added service lines, starting with residential and commercial real estate nearly 50 years ago, and now offering real estate, mortgage, insurance, corporate relocation, settlement, property management and vacation rentals. We’re a one-stop real estate shop, serving not only buyers and sellers, but also homeowners, investors, developers, businesses and more. We’ve also expanded into new markets, joining forces with Urban Pace, a new construction sales and marketing company, in April 2016 and becoming a part-owner of Moxi Works, a technology firm focused on the real estate industry, in September 2015. Additionally, we’re serving clients around the world through our partnerships with Christie’s International Real Estate, Leading Real Estate Companies of the World and Luxury Portfolio International. Through these networks, we’re connected with thousands of Realtors worldwide, so we can support our clients, no matter where they’re shopping for real estate. Additionally, our relationship with Christie’s has helped enable us to grow our business in the luxury real estate market. We were selected by Christie’s for our success in luxury home sales and our ability to meet strict standards of excellence. We’ve since become the largest affiliate in the Christie’s network and we’re leading the luxury market in many areas. For example, in the Washington, D.C., area, we sell more luxury real estate than both of our largest competitors combined. Additionally, we continually evaluate our marketplace and the global market to see how we can best serve the home buyers, sellers and owners in those areas. For example, by 2020, 11 percent of the population in Virginia will be Hispanic. By 2030, we project that 51 percent of our first-time home buyers will be Hispanic. Recognizing that, we have started initiatives to focus on those buyers. We’ve also seen growth along the East Coast from buyers in the Asia-Pacific market, particularly in China and Taiwan, so we’ve established a team to focus on that market.

When did you open your Fairfax County office?
Long & Foster opened our first Fairfax County office on the date of its founding in 1968.

What makes Fairfax County a good location for your business/organization?
Fairfax County is an excellent location for Long & Foster, and our headquarters in particular, because it’s our company’s home, first and foremost. After serving in the military, Long & Foster Founder P. Wesley “Wes” Foster, Jr., moved to the area and began working in the homebuilding industry before transitioning into real estate sales. By the time he opened Long & Foster, Northern Virginia was home to him and his family. Additionally, Fairfax County is an excellent location because of its schools, communities, businesses and proximity to Washington, D.C. It’s an ideal central location for a company that stretches throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.Easy access to the federal government.

What sets you apart from your competitors?
Long & Foster sets itself apart from others in the real estate space in a number of ways, first being our agent-first mentality. We strive to always offer the best available tools, training, technology and resources for our agents, ensuring they have everything they need to succeed as a Realtor. Long & Foster began as and remains a family owned company that takes part in and takes pride in our local communities. We aim to make every agent, employee and client throughout those communities feel that they are a member of the Long & Foster family. We were one of the first companies to create a suite of one-stop shopping real estate services with the goal of helping clients navigate the many aspects of a transaction with ease, so no matter a client’s needs, we have a knowledgeable resource for them right on hand. What new products or services are you offering?
While the basics of real estate have remained consistent for a number of years, Long & Foster works to make real estate transactions simple for clients by ensuring they are informed, they have all the tools they need right at their fingertips and their properties are highly visible, which means continuously adopting new technologies and adding new services. This includes the spring 2016 launch of our new website, which has immense focus on search engine optimization to ensure clients’ properties are highly visible on the web, our mobile app where consumers can easily search for homes wherever they are, as well as our company newsroom and blog where they can read helpful real estate advice, and more. Additionally, Long & Foster’s ancillary service companies work to ensure they’re providing customers with the most up-to-date products and services. Prosperity Home Mortgage, LLC, recently launched its own mobile app and is offering the new Fannie Mae HomeReady program. Long & Foster Insurance offers a full suite of insurance products, from homeowners insurance to health insurance, and the company continues to expand the services covered under its home warranty program. Long & Foster Property Management also has a new customer support call center and launched a new website to make the process of renting or managing a property even easier.
