Intelsat was established on August 20, 1964. We celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2014.

What is the origin of your company/organization name?
An international treaty formed our company. Intelsat was originally an acronym for the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization, a consortium of government members that began with 18 nations and grew to more than 200. We have been an international organization from our inception and play a vital role in the communications infrastructure of the entire globe.

We serve more than 1,100 customers around the world. Lastly, we provide customized satellite solutions to governments around the world.

What sets you apart from your competitors?
Intelsat is global, doing business in more than 200 countries and territories. It is also the largest satellite operator, with a global hybrid network that is comprised of approximately 50 satellites that cover 99 percent of the Earth’s populated regions. In a world where globalization is prevalent, being able to work with customers anywhere in the world is an important advantage.

In addition, our space infrastructure is designed to provide multiple types of communications services. This diversity positions us to be able to provide legacy, as well as emerging communications requirements.  For instance, much of the new, passenger broadband services available on commercial airplanes is powered by our network.
